So… about four days ago, my sister and I had a bet to see who was a cuter baby. She uploaded her picture to facebook. And I found my own profile pic and we had ourselves a cute-off! But that didn’t satisfy the empirical desire for data I had. So in a flash of inspiration, I decided to build a site that used javascript to essentially allow baby pictures to have a battle. The user would decide which baby picture is cuter.
Then as I started building it, I realized that this would be fun for everyone to create an account and submit their picture for battle. So I built that! The result is whoisthecuterbaby.com or thecuterbaby.com.
A couple of technical things to babble about. In the SQL database, I’m keeping track of Wins, Losses and also Ties. Thus far, the number of ties aren’t implemented yet. As you can tell from the lack of a TIE button on the battle site. Currently the algorithm picks a random picture from the database and then selects another random picture from the database. Until the first random picture contains more than 100 wins. After that, the algorithm changes and begins looking for pictures with similar W/L ratio. So the first 100 battles would theoretically give the database a baseline with which to begin culling the selection process for battle mates.
One particular proud query is the arch nemesis feature. As people decide who is cuter, inevitably some babies will develop arch nemesis… nemesises… nemesseses? Help me out there Casanova Frankenstein… Oh right nemeses. It finds babies that have battled the most and the outcome that’s most even.
Obviously, it would be fantastically grand if people started posting their pictures and had battles. But I would be interested in it mostly for the query-able data that would allow me to discover cooler features. But that’s neither here or there.
For now, all I know is I’m losing to my sister and she’s my arch nemesis, HA!
